Went for a Walk One Day

Went for a Walk One Day is a current installation along the Big 4 Rail Trail in Zionsville, Indiana. This activity is made possible in part by the Indiana Arts Commission, which receives support from the State of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts. Permission from the Zionsville Parks Department graciously allowed my pieces to have temporary residence there. I am grateful for both.

I am inspired by nature in general, but more specifically by small growths and ecosystems that exist all around us. The world at and beneath our feet is teeming with beneficial energy, communications and we are intermittently graced with its presence above ground.  My sculptural work incorporates familiar, yet odd growth forms that represent what may come in the future.

This piece, like most of my work, combines inspiration from fungi, lichen, slime molds and various persistent growths and a personal fascination of how nature may evolve in the future. In this particular project, I happened to stumble upon some information about “Walking” palms in Central and South America (Socratea exorrhiza). These palms, with exposed roots, can appear to move to areas with more beneficial sunlight. This idea mixed with my fungi preoccupation and voila! - my ceramic components were born.

Below are some images of the work as well as interesting little bits of nature that caught my eye within the site of the installation.
